Living Without a Microwave

MUSIC

That's what you say the first day of a new month I guess… Learned that from Sirius XM New Wave DJ Richard Blade a few years ago. Happy September.

As we are going into fall, it's my time to listen to more 80's new wave music. I'm not felling the pull quite yet, but it will come. It's interesting how my musical tastes change so much throughout the year.

In the summer, I'm all about country music and yacht rock. In the fall, I move to more moody Cure, Depeche Mode and other new wave bands. Then when the holidays come, I want nothing but jazz and crooners like Frank Sinatra. Do you ever notice a change in the music you want to listen to or do you like the same thing all the time?

GRAPHOLOGY

I've also been researching graphology! Have you heard of this? It explains what your handwriting means about you. I have noticed my e's are often closed, so much that they look like c's and that can mean you have a hard time expressing your emotions and conveying what you mean. Whoa.

I especially like this guy's videos on all the different letters of the alphabet. Of course it doesn't explain everything about you, but I like having a little more insight into things I may not be aware of.

LIVING WITHOUT A TOASTER

I'm getting use to life without a toaster or a microwave, and it's actually very freeing! (and it's wayyyy better) To make toast, I fry the bread in a pan and both sides are covered in butter now and it's soooo much better than toast ever was! You should try it.

LIVING WITHOUT A MICROWAVE

As for living without a microwave, that's pretty easy too. Maybe it wouldn't be if you had a meal with separate things you wanted to heat up, but so much of my cooking is just a jumbled mess in a pot that it's simple to re-heat a stew on the stove. I shouldn't say a mess. It's very tasty, but it's like why not mix the vegetables in with the beans or protein and sauce? I have some weird concoctions I make, but it also makes me more creative to think outside the box instead of think of just the same old recipes to make.

RESTAURANTS

And cooking weird things also makes me annoyed at restaurants for being so much of the same.

Always something covered in bread and meat and cheese.

Always some kind of potato or rice for a side.

Always a pop or alcohol for your drink.

How did we get to this place?

Why should I feel guilty for ordering water and not fermented wheat or high fructose corn syrup drink I don't want to put in my body? Why do all the salads come covered in meat and cheese? Why do I have to get fried potatoes and why do they taste so good, but make me feel bad later?

It's because this is what sells. I get it. Fried foods, dairy, meat, salt. That's what people want to eat. Restaurants have to make money and they need to put the food people will order in front of their customers. And people will order the stuff covered in meat and bread and cheese because it tastes good. But it's not so good for us.

I appreciate the places that are venturing out and trying to come up with some unique meals. I get that they can't go fully healthy, or no one will eat there.  I love eating french fries, but sometimes I get tired of the same old menu at all the restaurants. Makes me want to cook for myself more often.

Some places are doing cool things. I especially love any of the Market Bowls at Barriques and Quinoa Veggie Bowl at Cafe Hollander. And if you find your way out there, Black Earth Lanes has a decent menu too.

Those are the things I think about… But it's all part of the Slow Life goal of considering where things come from, why we do what we do, where our patterns come from, and considering if we want to keep living the way we're living. I've always been on the road trying to do what's different instead of do what it seems we should do, but it's a hard road in our society to go against the grain. Let's go together.
